Stephanie Orta-Vázquez
Actor. Writer. Collaborator.
Stephanie “Nani” Orta-Vázquez (she/they) is a Bilingual Multi-Hyphenated Latinx Artist born and raised in Puerto Rico and now based in NYC, where they graduated from Pace University with a BA in Acting with the International Performance Ensemble major program. This means that she is a Classically Trained Actor and a Devised Theater Maker who’s created and participated in multiple theater productions. She has trained in Poland with the Grotowski Institute and collaborated in Spain with the Institute of the Arts in Barcelona, where she also performed an original devised piece. Stephanie also studied English Literature and Creative Writing.
Many a time, Steph has been described as both effervescent and down-to-earth, often leading her to breathe life into out-of-this-world characters with a very grounded and very human spirit, as well as everyday archetypes with big personalities. Above all, Stephanie is a proud Boricua carrying Indigenous Taino ancestry, with a thirst to accurately represent and connect with her people.
Some of Stephanie’s fun special skills include: Spanish Speaking, Oracle & Tarot Card Reading, Dancing Bomba Puertorriqueña, and Drinking Matcha Lattes (preferably with oat milk). She also has Joint Hypermobility, which is a fun party trick every once in a while.

More pictures to come! Stephanie was a writer and performer for the collective piece WE ARE NOT THE GUERRILLA GIRLS, which had an open rehearsal/workshop presentation this past Friday, July 15th.
This is an ongoing original piece created by a collective of femme-aligned artists inspired by the work of the Guerrilla Girls. Performed by a diverse ensemble of 5 actors playing over 25 roles, we attempt to fill in the gaps of the group’s anonymity, taking the audience on an inside look into what being a Guerrilla Girl could look like. Reminiscent of sketch comedy, this project is an energetic romp through patriarchal game shows, a paint-splattered noir, and a hands-on creative catharsis for the audience.

Rum & Choke, an all-femme ensemble originated by Stephanie Orta-Vázquez and 4 other members (one of them, Essence Brown, pictured here), created and presented Dark Matter as their final university project on 2019. It gained much attention for its absurdist qualities, pop-culture based hilarity, and for the fact that it featured a fever dream nightmare sequence where Britney Spears herself walks over the fallen main character to sing a remix of her top hits as the protagonist is beaten up, smeared with cupcakes, and then nailed to a cross, all the while keeping up with a choreographed routine with backup dancers and glittery leotards. In April of 2020 it was meant to have another run at The Tank, but got cancelled due to the Panorama, the Pan Dulce, the Panda Express, however you’d like to call it. Theater was cancelled for a bit.
